Green Waste Composting with Reversing Aeration
Capacity (tpy)
44,000
Rapid growth in the Okanagan area of British Columbia pushed the City of Kelowna develop a local green waste processing operation. They selected ECS to design this new facility, a key part of improving sustainability and waste diversion in their community. Their experienced operators had a number of requirements, including:
Their green waste compost product, GlenGrow, is OMRI-certified and available for commercial and residential use.
Once selected as the compost process equipment vendor, ECS began working with the client’s engineer to develop the detailed facility design. ECS produced the mass-bed aerated static pile (ASP) aeration and control designs. The system features 11 mass-bed zones, with independently-controlled reversing aeration and cabled temperature probes. The ECS CompTroller™ control system includes intuitive operator interface PC software, automatic temperature feedback based control zone control and monitoring, and speed control of the fans for improved energy efficiency, tracking, and control.
Odors are controlled by routing exhaust air generated during negative aeration to a biofilter for scrubbing. During positive aeration, the moist biolayer cover helps to scrub odors while providing insulation.
Upon completion of the build, ECS engineers and technicians provided facility start-up, staff training and technical support.
