The city of Timaru, located on the southeastern cost of New Zealand, desired a larger facility to process its residential and commercial food waste and green wastes, and partnered with EnviroNZ to get it constructed and operating. The newly-built CASP facility will help the municipality to meet their landfill waste-reduction goals while reducing the distance that organics needed to be hauled for processing. The compost made at this facility will be made available to farmers, gardeners, and growers in the region.
After exploring options and visiting several facilities, Enviro NZ and City of Timaru ECS to design a composting solution that would fit well on the existing site and work optimally with their environment and feedstocks. The system was also built with the potential to expand.
The composting facility uses a 21-day, single-step aerated process. The primary composting bunkers are equipped with long-lasting, low-maintenance stainless steel trenches and cabled temperature probes which monitor real-time temperatures. These temperatures probe readings modulate the volume and direction of airflow in the reversing aeration system. The reversing aeration helps to maintain the uniform pile temperatures and oxygen levels, promoting stability and discouraging odors. Odors which are generated are scrubbed by the biolayer cover and biofilter in positive and negative aeration modes, respectively.
